Title:
We Speak for the Trees!
Annotation: This is the first lesson plan in The
Earth and Me unit. Students will be introduced to the concept of
deforestation through listening to The Lorax. They will then
identify areas of our state and country that contain National
Forests and make a list of things that they can do to prevent
deforestation in our environment.
Title:
A Wild River
Annotation: This is the second lesson plan in The
Earth and Me unit. After listening to a reading of A River Ran
Wild, students will sequence events important to the history of
the Nashua River. They will determine the causes of the
pollution in the river and then examine the effects.
Title:
Water, Water Everywhere
Annotation: This is the third lesson in The Earth
and Me unit. Students will work together as a whole class to
determine the definitions of different bodies of water. They
will then use a circle graph to discover where our world's water
comes from and what percentage of it is drinkable. Finally,
students will complete an online water usage calculator to
determine their own family's water usage and create a line
graph.
Title:
Air Quality Investigations
Annotation: This is the fourth lesson plan in The
Earth and Me unit. Students will learn about the Air Quality
Index as they study a variety of maps to determine the ozone
level in different areas of the country. They will then discuss
what they can do to help prevent further damage to our
atmosphere and write a paragraph explaining one course of
action.
Title:
Living the 3 R's
Annotation: This is the fifth lesson plan in The
Earth and Me unit. Students will first create a pictograph
demonstrating the number of students in the class who practice
recycling at home. They will then complete a worksheet in which
they categorize items that can be reduced, reused, or recycled
and create an advertising flyer that states a reason that
students should recycle.
Title: Litter Collectors
Annotation: This is the sixth lesson plan in The
Earth and Me unit. Students will work together to collect litter
around the school. They will weigh their litter and record their
findings on a map of the school. Using this map, students will
draw conclusions and make predictions on a worksheet.
Title:
Energy Meisters
Annotation: This is the seventh lesson plan in
The Earth and Me unit. Students will explore different sources
of energy and will answer questions about a map that shows coal
mines in the United States. They will then use a Web site to
take notes about how they can help save energy in their own
homes.
Title:
A Day for the Earth
Annotation: This is the eighth and final lesson
in The Earth and Me unit. In this culmination lesson, students
will review strategies that they have learned for conserving our
earth's resources. They will learn about the history of Earth
Day, participate in an Earth Day rap, and send a postcard to a
classmate explaining two strategies for helping the earth.
